One of our favorite pasttimes is going to Farmers Markets, and thankfully Buffalo has no shortage of them starting now that the weather is warming up. Still a little chilly so I’ve balanced out my sandals with a scarf, but added in my fun new tote bag for all of my market finds.

It’s the most wonderful time of year, truly.

Side Note-I can’t believe that I got rid of my old denim jacket. What was I thinking?! Last week I rectified the situation with this new one from Old Navy (on Sale!). As you will see from my the next few blog pics, the jacket has been on repeat.

Much love,

Mel

Although I was excited to embark upon my new business of styling, the winter months have certainly made it harder for me to get everything up and running. And with our growing desire to own a home sooner rather than later, I’ve decided that I need a full-time job. Something that will help fill our bank account and my time, until my styling business is such that I can completely support myself from that alone.

Back to the job drawing board. It’s been a few years since I’ve had to look for a job, let alone interview, and most of my work outfits are San Diego “warm weather” appropriate, but all I need is one look to get me into the door. And this is it.

I hate conventional suits. They’re so formal and I have found that people who don’t wear them often, are so stiff and uncomfortable, that it shows during their actual interview. I like to make my own suit-a little less matchy, matchy but still professional, and a great representation of myself and my personality.

When creating my own “suit”, I stuck to the basics-pencil skirt and blazer are still high priority, however, I have chosen my black lace pencil skirt to give the look a little more “oomph”. I also still stayed in professional colors: black and cream. Nothing outrageous. A cream blouse and my black blazer completes the look. I let myself have fun with the shoes though and chose my new leopard heels. Note: I cannot stress this enough-if you are not comfortable nor know how to walk in heels, DO NOT WEAR THEM. It will show. Trust me. Stick to a kitten heel or a wedge. Something that will still give you a professional look but won’t make you walk strangely around. People will notice. I don’t have that heel problem so I’m happy with my leopard bad boys. Not too loud but a little more personality than a plain black heel. That’s my choice. Stick with what makes you happy.

I’ve added in some fun, simple accessories and my structured bag, and I’m ready for whatever fabulous job awaits me!

Happy Monday!

Much love,

Mel

Yesterday was the hubs’s birthday so he decided that he wanted to venture out of our normal zone and try a new tap room in the surrounding suburbs for his celebration. I think we were both a little worried that it would be a hard day for him, not being around the friends and family he’s used to for his birthday, but our friends here-both old and new, met up with us and it was a great night, filled with laughs and good conversations.

I’m still having an adjustment period for going out in Buffalo. My first instinct is always heels or flats, for more casual outings. However, it’s too cold and too much ice on the ground to get away with either. So I’ve really upped my bootie game this season and am playing around with my outfits. This is my outfit from last night-in all honesty I should have been wearing a sweater instead of a blouse, but I haven’t worn this blouse enough since I got it so I decided to brave the elements. Of course I had a coat on top of this but that 21 degrees was not playing around. It worked out and my husband and I both were happy with the result, and that’s all that matters.

Happy Thursday!

Much love,

Mel

Blah, Blah, Blah…that’s normally what I’m hearing if someone tries to speak to me prior to my morning cup of coffee. I’m not a morning person-at all, so I definitely need some caffeine in my system before I can fully comprehend anything that you may be trying to say to me.

So when I saw this shirt at Banana Republic, I thought what a fun piece it would be to wear! T-shirts are always a necessity and there is nothing wrong with dressing them up with a fun statement necklace, as I’ve done here.

Now if you will excuse me, I’m gonna hunt down some coffee so I know that I can make it through the rest of the day. 😉

Much love,

Mel

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

I know a few people who are less than thrilled when receiving gift cards for special occasions. That they see it as less personal, almost a cop out for the giver, because there isn’t a lot of thought that needs to go into it. And while I understand the rationale, I wholeheartedly disagree. Yes, of course I love receiving gifts that clearly demonstrate there was a lot of thought or time that went into it. In fact, one of my favorite gifts from Christmas was one we received from one of our closest friends back in San Diego. It’s a calendar, with every month a different set of photos from friends and family back home. It’s amazing-something my husband and I both cherish (and I’m not afraid to say, took a while to get through because there were a lot of tears-both happy and homesick). However, I also loved the gift cards that I received because I’m getting money, money I didn’t have to save, to do shopping-something, if you haven’t guessed by now, I’m a fan of. 😉

This amazing dress was partially paid for by a gift card that I received from my sister-in-law, who gave me her own reasoning as to why she gave me a gift card and not a physical gift. Sweet, but funny-as I had created a wish list of items that I was interested in moments after I opened the gift so there was nothing to explain. See?! I love me some shopping and always have my eyes on one thing or another. I’m a wardrobe stylist and a fashion blogger-it’s part of my job to always look fashionable, so gift cards for me is just family and friends helping to support my cause!

So keep the gift cards coming! 😉

Much love,

Mel

I decided on a more playful look for these pics. Sure, the look at first glance is really basic-but did you see my tights?! Polka dots-love them! Fashion isn’t about being serious all the time, a little fun in your look is always allowed. I’m not saying dress like your toddler in matching tutus, but adding in a few elements that make you smile is never a bad thing. Will I always wear my polka dot tights? Of course not, but the sun was shining and there was just a more playful mood in the air. Sometimes you have to just seize the moment.

Much love,

Mel

Winter Whites

I have been obsessing over different takes of a monochromatic look for winter. Wearing all one color is not only flattering on most people but for especially those of us who are petite, a monochromotic look gives us the appearance of being a little taller (and we will take as much as we can!).

For Christmas, I received three favorite fashionista-minded gifts. The first was from my husband-a white skirt from Anthropologie. I love this skirt-not only is it very figure flattering but since it’s white I’m going to be able to rock it year round! When I opened it I knew instantly that I wanted to try the white on white monochromatic look with my white J.Crew Factory sweater I had bought during Black Friday.

My other two favorite gifts came from two of my closest girlfriends: a gray bag from Piperlime and a beautiful blanket scarf in purple (my fave color!) from J.Crew. I put them together with my white core look because if you know me, I have to have some kind of color in every outfit, and added gray tights and booties. I’m pretty happy with my look and feel it’s one that everyone could/should try.

Can we take a moment and appreciate the fact that I made it back outdoors despite the teens temperature?! Baby steps, baby steps. 😉

Happy Wednesday!

Much love,

Mel

Philosopher’s Party

Tonight is our first holiday party of the season! It’s for my husband’s Philosophy department so it will be definitely a little more low key, and it’s at a bar so think pretty casual. It IS the holidays however so although I would normally wear jeans and a blazer, I decided to do a festive casual. A simple green shift dress with a comfy cream sweater over. As the low is supposed to be 27 degrees tonight, I have opted for tights and booties-no bare legs until April in this town!

It goes against my nature to be attending any party without some glam, so I have opted for one of my statement necklaces with a little bling to it. Throw on my trilby, a fun statement ring, and we’re ready for a party!

Much love,

Mel
